"Fergie" the lucky bamboo (Dracaena braunii)

"Fergie" the lucky bamboo. Purchased at a Lowe's in Erie, PA around 2010. He was a braided style bamboo but I hated the constrained look, especially since the inner most stem had rotted out and needed removed to save the rest of the plant. I untied him and allowed Fergie to grow as wildly and lushly as possible. This photo is the summer after I bought him and had just replanted him. He had become way too big for his original pot (that was about the size of a water glass) and kept falling over sideways because he was so top heavy. I replanted him in this vase and gave him a little betta fish friend. I know most people consider this to be cruel to the fish but my betta loved to hide among Fergie's thin roots for protection. They shared a very happy co-existence for 2 years. Fergie's size doubled in a single year, I feel in part because of the fish poo acting as a natural fertilizer. Sadly, the betta got a skin virus and died but Fergie survived for several more years (and moves!) until he died in January of 2015 while in transit to Indiana. I'm not sure what killed him exactly but he simply went limp one day and died.
