Nebel's Raindow -- A History
Nebel's Rainbow, or "Nebbie" was the first plumeria I grew from a seed. I bought the packet of seeds on Ebay and they were shipped to me from a grower in Thailand. I bought 10 seeds and planted them immediately.
Unfortunately, due a hard downpour and a hungry chipmunk, only Nebbie sprouted. The remaining seeds wasted away.
That winter, I replanted Nebbie into a new pot. I did this to encourage him to grow deeper roots, because the original blue bonsai dish was rather shallow. At that time he was about 4 inches tall.
By July he had leaves bigger than he was tall, but his trunk remained delicate and soft and he had not grown much from that winter. Due to the large leaves and very delicate trunk, Nebbie started to lean over.
At this time, I decided to re-pot Nebbie into a much larger 2 gallon nursery pot. He looked silly in such a big pot when he seemed no bigger than your thumb. At this point I was starting to wonder in Nebbie was even a plumeria or if I had been sold a weed.
Once in the large nursery pot, Nebbie took no time to explode into his full plumeria glory. Like the ugly duckling, Nebbie went from a thumb sized weed looking plants to a foot tall plumeria with 3 new branches. At this point, Nebbie looks exactly like the plumerias I bought this year from California.
Nebel's Rainbow is a huge success story of growing a seedling plumeria in a cold weather zone.
