The Little Seedling That Could

A while ago in June, I wrote about planting some plumeria seeds I had ordered off Ebay from Thailand. I received 10 seeds and planted all 10 in a bonsai planter that was just begging for some use.

Nebel's Rainbow. We'll see if the end product looks like the picture because plumeria can look completely different from their parent - or I was deceived

The seed planting did not go as planned. At first, the seeds got hit by some small critter out for a free meal (probably our local, busy body chipmunk). So some of our seeds were destroyed that way. A few more got drowned out in a sudden freak summer storm ( and possibly tornado).

Finally, when it seemed like none of my seeds would grow, one brave little sprout poked his head out of the dirt. The most amusing fact is that this little seeds came from the seed pod that was half cracked and rather dumb looking, so I was certain that it was a dud. Looks can be deceiving!

Over time the little seedling was left to his own devices to grow. And grow he did! Unfortunately, he also gained some rather nasty mites for friends in his soil and I was forced to replant him for the winter because he was moving inside along with JJ and I did not want him to spread his unruly friends around to my other plants.

So here is our little seedling, thriving in his new pot. He won't be sprouting any flowers any time soon. From my research, he needs about 3 good years of growing to even start thinking about growing a few flowers, but it will be a lot of fun to watch and note his progress.
